"...I have no doubt some serious work went into getting the formula just right because no one flavor dominates, the spice and seasonings all meld together beautifully. I couldn't stop dunking my short ribs into this sauce. I'm convinced it would make just about anything taste good."

The Story of SFQ

SFQ was born in July 2009, after a conversation John and I had about the fact that San Francisco didn't have any real indigenous barbeque culture, let alone a signature barbecue sauce.

That led to a long debate as to what could, should, and would be in a "San Francisco-style" barbecue sauce. We decided it must include three of San Francisco's favorite things…the finest local chocolate and coffee, as well as oak-aged red wine vinegar, straight from the wine country.

Using those ingredients as our inspiration, we took our favorite Kansas City style sauce recipe and added spices and flavorings from Southeast Asia, China, India, Latin America, and the Mediterranean, and created what we think is a great, and truly unique barbecue sauce as culturally diverse as the city it represents.

Our sauce is handcrafted in small batches, and made with all natural, mostly local ingredients, including California organic, vine-ripened tomatoes. SFQ is vegan, gluten-free, virtually fat-free, medium spicy, and contains no high fructose corn syrup.

This sauce is a labor of love, literally, and by the way, our very first dinner date, over 25 years ago, was at a local barbecue joint. Now, we are very proud to say that San Francisco has its very own original barbecue sauce! We hope you enjoy SFQ as much as we do!

  2. When my son went to SF to stay with my brother-in-law, I made sure that he came home with 4 jars of SFQ!. Needless to say: I'm hooked. You have a customer for life!! (and a snarky commenter for your husband;)
